In a gas turbine engine, air is pressurized in a compressor and mixed with fuel in a combustor for generating hot combustion gases. Energy is extracted from the gases in a high pressure turbine (HPT), which powers the compressor, and in a low pressure turbine (LPT), which powers a fan in an aircraft turbofan engine application, or powers an external drive shaft for marine and industrial applications.
The hot combustion gases are directed over a series of alternating stages of stationary vanes and rotating turbine blades. The vanes and blades are formed with hollow airfoils that channel the gases to extract energy therefrom for powering the compressor and providing thrust.
In most turbofan and turboprop engines, the fan is driven by the turbine via a mechanical drive shaft. In bypass engines, the turbine drives a shaft that is coupled to a power recovery or gearbox. In these engines, there is a need for a small diameter shaft for reducing weight and increasing the fan bypass ratio over a larger diameter mechanical drive shaft.
In some engines, the fan is driven by the LPT via an electrical drive shaft. This eliminates the need for an additional mechanical drive shaft. However, there is a need to limit airflow around electrical lines in order to reduce the chances of electrical shorts.
It is known to position a duct between the fan nacelle and the fan, which serves to prevent airflow around the fan nacelle and over the fan. Unfortunately, the duct only provides for one fan to nacelle gap, and the duct must be constructed to allow a leak air bleed over the front of the fan nacelle. This adds cost and weight, and increases assembly time.
